The Apprentices follows the first book in the trilogy, “The Apothecary”. This is about two teenagers named Janie and Benjamin who reconnect after being two thousand miles apart for two years. Benjamin was halfway across the world with his dad treating the ill, while also coming up with a way to communicate with Janie. When Benjamin finds out that Janie is in danger, he reunites with their old friend, Pip, to help. Once they all get in touch with each other by using formulas and dangerous risks, they all have to figure out who and why they are being targeted. Will Janie, Benjamin, and Pip face their own dangers, unite together to solve the enigma while facing the real threat? Or will they get in the clutches of their dreadful foes so quickly?
This book is part of a trilogy written by Maile Meloy that has a similar plot twist in each book. This book really connects to the previous book because it has the same few major/minor characters, is based on a similar concept, and they all collaborate to unravel enigmas as well as defeat the threat. I enjoyed the book from the beginning to the end and would rate it a 4.5/5 stars. I would definitely recommend this book to all who love magic, mysteries, & historical fiction elements.
