Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer by John Grisham is a mystery/legal thriller following the story of middle school student Theodore Boone. Thirteen year old Theodore Boone’s parents are both lawyers. His uncle was a lawyer. He even hangs around the courtroom and law offices. He has an interest in the legal field, dreaming of being a great trial lawyer. He already knows every judge, police officer, and court clerk in the town of Strattenburg. After a shocking turn of events during the murder trial of the century, Theo finds himself in the middle of a real legal trial. Only Theo knows the truth, and he is faced with the dilemma of trying to make sure a cold-blooded killer isn’t set free.

This overall was a great book, one of the few legal thrillers I have read. One thing I appreciated about the book was the setting, and decisions made by characters. I believe the characters made realistic and understandable decisions when faced with certain problems. The author also did a great job building Theo’s world, giving the reader an insight into some of the ordinary events that occur in his daily life. Theo’s life is very organized, following a rigid schedule, which allows the more significant events to stand out as they were unpredictable. Another thing I liked was the smaller interactions between Theo and other characters, creating smaller events that were placed throughout the book that may not have been related to the main story. The story itself is also interesting, keeping the reader engaged throughout the novel. I even picked up a few facts about laws and the legal system I didn’t know before reading this book. If you enjoy realistic fiction, mystery, or are just looking for a new book to read, I would recommend this book for you.
