Lobizona tells the story of Manuela, a young Argentine immigrant who lives an undocumented life with her mother and grandmother in Miami. All her life, Manu has been confined to her apartment; never allowed to go to school, attend parties, make friends, or even fall in love. Her mother has done everything to keep Manu hidden, not only from the U.S. government but from the entire world. You see, Manuela isn’t your ordinary girl; her golden eyes reflect the sun and her pupils are bright silver stars. Manuela has spent her life believing that this makes her an outsider, until the day her family falls apart. When her mother is taken by ICE, Manuela is faced with a choice: continue her life in secret, or figure out who she is once and for all. As Manuela’s path leads her deeper into her history, the more magic and danger she discovers…
What an awesome read! This book has it all, magical worlds filled with fantastical creatures, Argentine culture, and real life issues and concepts. This book tackles gender, immigration, identity, belonging, and is inspired by the author’s experiences as an Argentine immigrant. Garber added in many layers of intrigue, magic, and mystery to this novel that kept me guessing until the very end. I also loved the character development for both the main character and her friends; I felt as though I made deep connections with each of them. These aspects made the book so enjoyable and definitely kept me invested in the adventure! Overall, if you love fantasy, learning about different cultures, and loveable characters, I’d recommend picking up this wonderful novel!
