Baba Yaga’s Assistant by Marika McCoola; illustrated by Emily Carroll

baba-yaga-coverMasha misses her mom who died a long time ago, but she misses her grandmother even more. Grandma took care of her for many years and now she is gone. Masha loved all the stories Grandma told her, especially the one about Baba Yaga.

Now Masha’s father brings home a stepmother and terrible stepsister. That’s why Masha answers Baba Yaga’s ad: “Assistant wanted ASAP. (…) Enter Baba Yaga’s house to apply”. Before she gets the job, she needs not only to enter the chicken-legged house, but also to pass several tests including cleaning a very dirty house, feeding the slithering pets, and cooking dinner with children on the menu.

This book is Marika McCoola’s stunning graphic novel debut with exquisite art by Emily Carroll.  Recommended for ages 10 and up
