Preschool Power STEM Storytime- Cookies and Math!

Today we read books about cookies and had a little math fun, as well. Preschool age kids are learning math concepts all the time and picture books often have lots of learning opportunities.

We read:
The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins
Chocolate chip cookies are delicious, but every time the doorbell rings there are more kids who want to eat some. Preschoolers aren’t ready for math at the symbolic level (12÷2=6 or 12÷4=3), but boy, do they understand the math of sharing cookies!

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff
You’ve probably read this to your kids more than once and that’s great! All that repetition helps kids learn the sequence of events in the book. Sequencing is both an early literacy (pre-reading) skill and a math skill.
