Welcome to Preschool Power and our STEM Storytime topic: Gravity!
Today we shared stories that show how gravity works. Gravity is a force that pulls things to the center of the earth (or to the ground) so, what goes up must come down. Your child has been learning about gravity since babyhood. Remember how your baby used to drop food off the high chair? That was your child experimenting with gravity!
Use non-fiction and stories to start conversations about gravity:
I Fall Down by Vicki Cobb
Try these simple experiments introduce basic concept of gravity. Do one experiment or all of them depending on your child’s interests.
Clip Clop by Nicola Smee
Cat and dog and pig and duck climb aboard Mr. Horse for a ride. What happens if they go too fast?
Little Owl Lost by Chris Haughton
Little Owl is high up in the nest with Mama Owl when he falls out of the nest.
We experimented with gravity:
Dropping races-Hold 2 objects and drop them at the same time. Does one hit the ground first or is it a tie?
Kids are natural scientists! Let them experiment and figure things out for themselves. Don’t worry if they come up with crazy sounding ideas about how things work. Even when their ideas are not technically correct, they are practicing the process of thinking things through.
