It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words and that is certainly true in the scores of Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America titles that are available for check out in libraries throughout Washington County, including here at Cedar Mill. In this series, you’ll discover a simple yet graceful layout that combines evocative photos with brief, richly described historical narrative. The series’ singular design brings each photo to life and delivers a reading experience that is like stepping back in time.
Zita Podany is the author of Vanport, an installment in the Images of America series that tells the story of the Vanport Flood, arguably the most dramatic and life-altering event in Portland’s history. The flood devastated the innovative 648-acre North Portland housing development in 1948, leaving 18,000 people homeless and affecting land use planning and race relations in the metro area for many years to come. Zita will be the featured guest speaker when the Writers’ Mill meets at 1:00 PM on April 23rd in the library’s second floor community room. Using Vanport and the Images of America series as examples, she will discuss the art and science of juxtaposing images and text to provide a unique reading experience.
Whether you’re hoping for publication, planning to self-publish, or writing just for fun, you are invited to join The Writers’ Mill for a hands-on inspiring gathering of people who love to write. Newcomers are always welcome!
