More Summer Reads
Cedar Mill Reads newsletter for the week of June 18, 2010 - by Liz
Looking for something different to read? That's usually my question when I'm leaving the library for the day. One result of my (almost) daily quest is that I usually have a very eclectic pile of books on my coffee table, there for whatever mood I'm in, whether it's thought-provoking character-driven fiction, historical mystery, or completely off-the-wall fantasy. Give some of these a try and see what you think! -- Liz, Reference Librarian, Adult Services

Catching Fire By Collins, Suzanne 2009-09 - Scholastic Press 9780439023498 Check Our Catalog 2010 Children's Choice Award Winner-Teen This series was recommended to me by another librarian, and I was somewhat surprised how much I enjoyed this dynamic action-filled story with its compelling female protagonist. The second book does not disappoint, and the third is coming out later this summer. |

The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear By Moers, Walter Translator Brownjohn, John 2005-11 - Overlook Press 9781585677245 Check Our Catalog I found this on an endcap display in Fiction, where the bright yellow cover caught my eye. I've read a lot of fantasy, but this book (and its sequel) were new to me. It reads a bit like Gulliver's Travels (but not quite so political). Definitely a "shaggy bear" story, but very amusing and worth a look if you need something slightly episodic, silly but smart to read while waiting for Summer to arrive :-) More details below. |

An Instance of the Fingerpost By Pears, Iain M. 2000-04 - Riverhead Books 9781573227957 Check Our Catalog A perfect long, juicy read for a weekend at the beach; four intertwined perspectives on the same set of events, set in mid-17th century London, with a bit of the scientifical Royal Society thrown in for good measure. I'm loving this book! |
