Early Literacy - Books for Young Children and Their Parents
Find books to foster early literacy with kids as well as tips for parents in our Cedar Mill Reads newsletter for October 16, 2010.
Early Literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. Reading aloud to children every day is the best thing you can do to help them get ready to become readers!
Six pre-reading skills your child can learn from birth:
- Print motivation - A child's interest in and enjoyment of books.
- Vocabulary - Knowing the names of things.
- Print awareness - Noticing print, knowing how to handle a book, and how to follow the written word on a page.
- Letter knowledge - Learning to name letters, knowing they have sounds, and recognizing them everywhere.
- Narrative skills - The ability to describe things and events and tell stories.
- Phonological awareness - The ability to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words; being able to hear and use rhymes.
